ELEMENTS

EDGE is the title of my book which encompasses over thirty years making photographs. The title comes from the world of Complexity Science which investigates what occurs when large quantities of individual elements coalesce. At some high level of organization, bordering on chaos, a new structure emerges – something that is not just complicated, but rather an entirely new entity that is both greater than the sum of its parts and fundamentally different from them. The magical region where this powerful phenomenon unexpectedly appears is the “edge of chaos”. This concept has provided a metaphor for the development of my work.

Just as elementary particles are the building blocks of atoms that morph and combine to form more wondrous complex structures, similarly these early images from my Elements portfolio utilize a handful of basic geometric shapes and colors. This body of work forms the foundation for the intricate “edge of chaos” compositions in my later projects.
